Her red blood cells were so low that she was sent for a bone marrow biopsy. The 28-year-old was diagnosed with myelofibrosis, a type of bone marrow cancer that disrupts the normal production of blood cells.
Less than a month after her diagnoses, she received her first blood transfusion of two units at Bowral Hospital. Then it was two units every fortnight at Crookwell District Hospital.
"My family have always been advocates for giving blood and organ donation," Mrs Jaffrey said.
Since her initial diagnosis, she has received more than 50 blood products. Donor blood she received while she waited for stem cell treatment in November enabled her to live.
Mrs Jaffrey hopes people will answer the Australian Red Cross Blood Service's call for donors for the upcoming holidays.
"The difference you are making in people's lives is immense," she said. "Donating blood is something you can do which could actually save somebody's life."
Due to a low number of appointments, Goulburn Blood Donor Centre needs 31 extra donors between April 18 and April 25 to bolster supplies for cancer patients and road trauma patients.
Blood service spokesperson Megan Green said Easter was one of the most challenging times of year to collect blood. "Back-to-back public holidays mean more donors are likely away on holidays. Three public holidays in quick succession is a challenge for short-lived blood stocks."
