The $1.7 million, four-year pilot program, will help resource constrained councils identify energy saving projects and build a case for upgrades.
"There's a great desire in these local government areas to be part of a sustainable future and this program will provide the support and expert advice to help turn that desire into reality," OEH sustainability programs director, Mick O'Flynn, said.
"Work has already started on analysing the council's energy consumption at the council facilities, and identifying priority sites for energy audits," economic development officer, Brenda Proudman said.
The other councils are Balranald, Bega Valley, Eurobodalla, Hay, Lachlan, Warren, Coonamble, Liverpool Plains, Cessnock, Maitland, Nambucca, Gwydir, Clarence Valley, Richmond Valley, Kyogle, Fairfield and Campbelltown.
