This week, the NSW Government launched a campaign to attract metro-shoppers to buy from the bush at the Sydney Fish Markets.
The free service is an online hub that includes information to help local businesses create an online presence to sell direct to city shoppers, or list their business details to take phone or email orders.
There are six categories: wine, fashion, food, gifts for kids, art and design, and Christmas hampers.
The Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro, Minister for Small Business Damien Tudehope, chef Matt Moran and the founders of online communities #BuyFromTheBush, Grace Brennan, and #OneDayCloserToRain were at the launch.
"Regional businesses can participate in the Buy Regional hub and social media network for free by simply registering online," Mr Barilaro said.
Mr Barilaro said people in the cities want to help those affected by the drought. The hub already features businesses from Broken Hill, Coonamble, Inverell and White Cliffs.
"Every dollar you spend with a regional retailer or producer helps keep that small business afloat, supports jobs in that town and gets money flowing through the local economy, which is exactly what is needed while we wait for the drought to break," he said.
The website, nsw.gov.au/buyregional, went live on Monday, since there have been almost 22,000 unique views.
There are currently 39 businesses listed on the site. A spokesperson from the NSW Government said that there will be hundreds more added this week.
To be listed, registered businesses need to be based in Regional NSW and have an online presence to link to. This could be a web page, or a social media page showing the products available for sale.
There's no requirement for a business to have online merchant facilities like an online shop.
