Hayden Waters, 25, of Gunning pleaded guilty to possessing ammunition without a licence, acquiring a firearm part without the authority to do so and possessing a prohibited drug when he appeared in Yass Local Court on Friday November 15.

Police banned Waters on July 22 from having a firearm, firearm parts and ammunition, according to police facts tendered in court.

During a search of his Gunning address, police found 72 rounds of ammunition and 0.5 grams of cannabis.

Police also found two firearm bolts in the bottom vegetable drawer of the fridge.

Waters admitted he owned the ammunition, firearm parts and cannabis during the search.

In court, Waters' solicitor said his client had the ammunition and firearm parts before the Firearm Prohibition Order was issued.

The solicitor said Waters didn't know how to get rid of them and wasn't comfortable approaching police about them.

"No actual firearms were located (during the search) so those items (ammunition and firearm parts) weren't being used," the solicitor said.

However, Magistrate Geraldine Beattie said firearms should be registered, stored safely and the owner should have a licence.

She fined him $1200 for the ammunition, $150 for the cannabis and placed him on a community corrections order for 15 months.
