Police said the 45-year-old was maintaining a skeet shooting machine, used in clay pigeon shooting, on a Bigga district property when its throwing arm suddenly released at about 10.50am.
It struck one of the man's lower arms, causing a major laceration.
A person on the property initially assisted him but paramedics applied a tourniquet when they arrived, an ambulance media spokeswoman said.
He was still conscious but the laceration involved muscles and tendons.
Ambulance requested police assistance and the man was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital at midday in a serious but stable condition.
