“In the last 12 months the prospect of having our own ‘Shed’ premises has moved much closer to reality,” said Ron Browne, president of the Crookwell Men’s Shed.
“And while each member has in some way made his contribution some have gone well beyond a reasonable call to duty.
“I would particularly like to acknowledge the work done by Mike Mayoh, ably assisted by Don Southwell, in securing the lease and submitting grant applications on behalf of the Shed. “Mike’s dogged determination in the face of bureaucratic ‘red-tape’ has to-date resulted in a $30,000 grant from the State Government.
An application for a further $30,000 has been submitted to the Veolia Trust.
“If this application is successful, the two grants, supported by donations from Rotary and the Lackanooki Fishing Club, plus our own savings, will ensure sufficient funds to complete the project.”
“Don Southwell’s has proven invaluable in the submitting of the Development Application and the organisation of the building program.
“Some amongst us are ‘multi-skilled’.
“The wood raffle program for the year, in the capable hands of Chris Fenton and a great team of helpers, has again done well, making a significant contribution to our fund raising.
“To those mentioned in this report, and to each member who has assisted in any way, I offer sincere thanks and appreciation,” said Mr Browne.
Thanks is also extended to the Beyond Blue organisation for the gift of a new lap top computer with internet access.
Once established in our new premises direction will be sought in utilising this asset.
“Our ‘Shed’ is a good place to come.
“We continue to meet the needs of not only our members, but also many in the community who have special needs or requirements.
“We have constructed medical aids, repaired wheelchairs and moved mattresses and furniture for disabled; re-hung doors to offer security and peace of mind to those who have felt vulnerable, taken unwanted items to the tip, and generally found solutions for many with unique problems.”
The demand for chair repairs and restoration has continued and we have restored several antique type tables and cabinets.
Larger items have included the construction of three storage and display units for the local Council and our signature memorial bench seats.
“Crookwell Rotary Club continues to give us moral support so it has been gratifying for us to provide manpower at the Rotary sponsored ‘Swap Meet’.
“Our involvement in the Christmas in the park festivities, The Potato Festival and Landmark Field Day has further contributed to our profile.
“Our standing within the community is excellent and continues to be enhanced as we work with students from Crookwell High and Crookwell Primary Schools.
“Reports in the Crookwell Gazette and the Voice have been positive and encouraging.
“Throughout the year several of our members have experienced medical problems. Considering the ‘vintage’ of most of us this should not be unexpected.
“What is of great satisfaction is the caring concern and practical support given by fellow members.
“Our Christmas party was once again enjoyed by all.
“A big thank you to our wives who prepared some exquisite dishes and especially to Joe and Jan for their organisation.
“We stand on the brink of new and exciting items.
“Undoubtedly there will still be many challenges.
“But with patience and the combined resources of our members we will embrace those challenges and continue to meet the needs in this community.
Thank you all for your support - Ron Browne
