The local government election date is September 10.
The workshop will be held at the Council Chambers on June 24 between 9.00am and 12.00 noon.
All people interested in attending must RSVP to Helen Petterson by June 17 on 48301000.
The workshop will be conducted by Mr Narayan van de Graaff from Local Government NSW.
The program will enable those interested in becoming a councillor to gain a better understanding of their role and responsibilities if elected as a member for Council.
Councillors have a key role in making decisions that influence both short term concerns and long-term strategic direction of their Local Council.
The briefing is designed to give prospective councillors the information they require to make a considered decision.
At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Identify the key requirements for becoming a councillor
Recognise how the councillor role fits in with other roles and various levels of government
Address their key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor
Know how the councillor role fits in with the Integrated Planning and Reporting framework
Identify key elements of council meetings, including code of conduct and conflict of interest
You will learn the benefits and importance of Local Government and better understand the role of Council and the role of a Councillor, the challenges of the role and how to manage them. You will be guided on how to speak out on key issues and how to do this confidently.
You may learn meeting procedures and rules of debates. You will also be given an introduction to local government jargon and what it means.
This will all be presented in a powerpoint presentation and discussion sessions with the participants.
