The project received $6 million in funding from the NSW Government’s Restart NSW Water Security for Regions Program, with the remaining $1 million funded by the Upper Lachlan Shire Council.
Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward and Upper Lachlan Shire Council’s Mayor Brian McCormack OAM and General Manager John Bell today visited the site at Waterworks Road, Crookwell, where construction commenced in October 2016.
Member for Goulburn, Pru Goward acknowledged the project as one of the single biggest investments to secure Crookwell’s water supply in decades. She said the funds will help to provide Crookwell with a first class water supply system, ensuring superior drinking water quality, improved reliability in times of drought and increased capacity to support the future growth of the town.
“This project is vital to the Crookwell community in that it will not only provide the town with better water security, it will also ensure the economic viability of the region for it to grow and prosper,” Ms Goward said.
“It will deliver more accessible water from groundwater bores and Crookwell Dam, and provide a continuous, high quality drinking water supply – something the region deserves and expects.
“It will be of great relief to residents to know that the Government is working to secure water for them in the future.”
Cr McCormack said when completed the new Water Treatment Plant will have the capacity to supply a minimum 4 million litres of drinking water to Crookwell each day.
“This project will ensure that Crookwell’s water needs will be met for decades to come,” Cr McCormack said.
“On behalf of Council I would like to thank the State Government for their significant investment in Crookwell’s future.”
The Crookwell Water Security Project will also see huge improvements to the efficiency of water usage in the region. The connection of existing bores directly to the water treatment plant will effectively double the secure yield of the town’s water supply by fully utilising the bores and reducing water loss.
The Plant will operate using the dissolved air flotation and filtration process. Water treatment processes will be improved and will include fluoridation and multiple disinfection techniques, ensuring better quality drinking water is provided to the community.
Design and construction of the plant is being undertaken by Laurie Curran Water Pty Ltd, who also completed the Gunning Water Treatment Plant for Council in 2014.
Additional works, as part of the project, will be undertaken by Council, including renewals to the town’s water mains and the installation of improved watering systems for Council’s sporting fields.
Interruptions to regular water supplies will be kept to a minimum throughout the process.
