Gunning Garden Club members were delighted that patron Marjorie Basnett was present at their first meeting for 2017. A centenarian, Mrs Basnett was in good form and happily greeted members as they sat next to her for a chat.

The Club will hold its annual general meeting at the Foley Centre, March 12 at 2pm. This is a great time to join the Club, which has a number of activities planned for the coming year. These include Friendship Day at Riversdale, Goulburn on March 14 where the guest speaker will be the President of Garden Clubs of Australia. RSVP to club secretary by March 1. A visit to the Botanic Gardens on April 9 is also planned.
ROLL UP!
Just a few sleeps until the Gunning Show celebrates all things local this Sunday. Council staffers have prepared the grounds. An army of volunteers has set up the pavilion and the wide variety of livestock exhibit rings. The Show office has been a hive of activity.
“A highlight this year will be the fresh food and produce hub with 10 stalls,” said Show president Frank Hannan.
Donations of eggs, zucchini, pumpkin, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, potatoes and capsicum for the Show kitchen would be most gratefully accepted as would any slices that you might happen to whip up!
TREASURE HUNT!
It started with local fossicker Michael Brown unearthing an old trophy with the words ‘GDSAAA Champ Girl under 6 J Lees’ on it and then went viral on local social media. The suggestions poured in on who this might be with memories being searched for clues.
Gunning District Historical Association’s Greg Murphy found the relevant Trove article from The Goulburn Evening Post November 2, 1954. It mentions J Lees as well as many others with well known district surnames.
