After years of veiled threats local cricket legend Geoff Nicholson has finally confirmed that the time has come to call it a day. Over some 35-years there has not been a season played without the old master being a big part of it, having featured in around 800 matches in an outstanding career. Anybody who has bowled to him in that time would agree that he is right up there with the best local batsmen Crookwell has produced. Back in the day he scored over 800 runs in a season.

Not just a batsman though, in a recent game Nicho bowled the top scoring opposition batsman and immediately reminded his team mates “I used to be an opening bowler too you know”. A dead-set talented all-rounder but for 34 of his 35 years you would have found Nicho fielding at first slip.
Nicho started his career with Laggan then the Services team and then on to Commercials. His career rounded off with the current Crookwell Golf Club side who won the premiership the first year of the Goulburn competition.
Just to confirm his credentials I went to the oracle of Crookwell cricket Geoff Fahey. What stood out to him was not the amazing talent but something the statistics do not show – the level of sportsmanship and dedication to the committee of the Crookwell Association. It has been a pleasure playing with a good friend and great competitor and his presence will be missed. No doubt there are still plenty of runs left in you Nicho.
