They both lived in Strathfield at the time. Mrs Miller said she was 15 when she met her husband to be. “We dated for a few years and then broke off for a while but when I was 17, I got my licence, and was so excited, but I had no-one to tell!” she said. “I phoned George to tell him and we started seeing each other again. We have been together ever since.”

The couple have had three children and made their home in Crookwell for the past 24 years.

Their honeymoon was a driving tour for three weeks, visiting Broken Hill, then down to Adelaide and back across and up the east coast.

Mrs Miller first worked in the ANZ Bank and Mr Miller helped his uncle as a clerk in his office. They were auctioneers early in their careers. Mr Miller also worked for the stock exchange when he was 21.

George proposed to Patsy just before Christmas 1953. “I remember seeing a lovely wedding dress in DJs, but couldn’t afford it at the time,” she said. “My friend drew the pattern and found a seamstress and I got the dress made. I can remember I felt I looked like a meringue. Nonetheless, we had a beautiful wedding.”

The Millers discovered Crookwell when they came to the Picnic Races in 1971. Their good friend, Justin McCarthy, was the president of the race committee at that time. “We met all these nice people,” Mrs Miller said. “George wanted a farm and we found home at the top of Wades Hill in 1993.”

Mr Miller had a stroke in July this year and his hearing is letting him down, but they have keep active in the community. He served as deputy mayor for eight years, and clubs including Rotary, Probus, VIEW and gardening in Goulburn and Crookwell have kept them busy. Mrs Miller still attends Champagne Fitness and up until last year was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

“We have always had the same interests and talk to one another all the time,” she said. “This is important in a marriage.” The best part? “He always agreed with me.”
