Firefighters believe the fire may have been caused by electrics under the A-trailer or by the truck's brakes, but NSW Rural Fire Service Operational Officer of the Southern Tablelands Zone, Lachlan Gilchrist, said it was hard to tell.
It took Gunning and Oolong Rural Fire Brigades from 10.50pm until 1.25am to extinguish the fire that impacted the A-trailer. They worked in low temperatures of around four degrees.
Mr Gilchrist said it was fortunate the truck wasn't carrying a more flammable cargo.
The truck driver was treated by paramedics on scene but not taken to hospital. His injuries were minor.
Only one southbound lane was closed while emergency services responded to the incident.
Police were not viewing the fire as suspicious, said Sergeant David Cowell of Yass Police Station.
There have been five truck fires, including one fatality, on the Hume Highway since November.
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator launched an investigation into truck fires in March this year following a spate nationally.
