Mr Abbott dropped in on a cold winters day with the temperature only reaching seven degrees. Hi last visit was in June 2007 where the temperature wasn’t much better.
The focus of this visit was to recognise people within the Goulburn community, small businesses and the farming sector.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor organised this visit and said, "We've got a lot going on around the electorate."
"We have huge investment from the federal government in telecommunications, road projects, a new headspace facility in Goulburn and I wanted Mr Abbott to see personally what is happening here."
On his journey from Canberra to Goulburn, Mr Abbott visited a farm in the Lake Bathurst area to appreciate personally the challenges presented to consistently produce excellent product and noted the improvements in farming techniques that ensure sustainability into the future.
He started his visit on this selected farm talking about the impact of the asset write-offs.
'We are meeting a farmer who asked for these write-offs several months before the budget, so it's fantastic to see the impact that the budget initiatives are having on farmers in this region," explain Mr Taylor.
“The Prime Minister’s address was aimed at the local community and it was refreshing to hear him connect at a personal level,” said Mrs Susan Reynolds from The Crookwell CWA Day Branch.
Judy Offley, Treasurer of the Crookwell CWA Day Branch also represented their group at a Hume Morning Tea along with many others invited from the Crookwell region.
The event was very well supported by over 200 local not for profit organisations, the farming community, local and State Government representatives, school children and their teachers as well as invited residents and business owners.
“I thank these people for investing a lot of time and energy into this community,” Mr Abbott said.
He also applauded the leadership, drive and dedication of the not for profit groups in supporting local communities and by doing so are making substantial contributions.
“I also point out that your local member for Hume Mr Taylor is a great fighter for this area.” Abbott said.
“We will back people ‘that have a go’.”
School representatives were delighted when Mr Abbott graciously provided photo opportunities with school groups. After making eye contact with each introduction, the Prime Minister engaged with each group to find out what their hopes were for the future.
St Mary’s school captains Lachlan Evans and Emily Secomb had a photo opportunity with the Prime Minister.
