George Tooke Shield
The Crookwell Green Devils George Tooke side returned to the Memorial Oval on Saturday to take on the reigning premiers the Bungendore Tigers
The Devil’s side again made a slow start and after only four minutes the Tigers were in for a converted try to take the lead 6-0.
It wasn't long before the Devils clicked into gear and in the 9th minute Ben Cummins crossed out wide for a good try.
The conversion attempt from Danny Knight was wide and the score at 6-4.
The Crookwell side cut their mistake rate and played some good footy for the next 10 minutes.
Then in the 17th minute Josh Kleinig was on the end of some good lead up work from his inside back to score a great try out wide.
Knight converted and the Devils were leading 10-6.
However, the lead was short lived as the Tiger’s back rower scored a converted try to take back the lead 12-10
This sprung the young Devils side into action and in the 28th minute Tyler Keller crossed for a converted try to take the score to 16-12 to the home side.
The Crookwell side came out after the break and decided to have a little sleep allowing the Tigers to score a converted try and take the score to 18-16.
The Tigers side was well on top after their early try and didn't have to wait long to cross again with one of their back rowers scoring a converted try in the 13th minute which pushed the score line out to 22-16.
Tigers scored again two minutes later and the conversion attempt was waved away but the referee in his infinite wisdom allowed the Tigers kicker a second attempt which was successful to take the score to 28-16.
The Crookwell side were still showing plenty of fight and in the 18th minute Ben Cummins crossed for his usual home ground double and Knight converted.
The Devils were back in the hunt at 28-22.
The Devils never say die attitude was starting to show and in the 22nd minute the McGeechan brothers combined brilliantly with Charlie putting Mitch into a big gap to score next to the posts.
The try was converted and the score was locked up at 28 all.
The game remained tight with neither side able to gain the upper hand, then after a further 30 minutes the Tigers broke the deadlock with their centre scoring a converted try. The Crookwell team couldn't recover and in the last minutes of the game the Tigers scored a converted try to take the full time score to 38-28 to the Bungendore Tigers.
All the Crookwell players played well.
In the forwards Nathan Storrier had another big game with his defence again a feature, being supported well by Captain Jamie Boothman.
Andy Leonard played well off the bench and in the backs Danny Knight and Josh Kleinig stood out with strong running and solid defence, well supported by the two starting halves Tyler Keller and Mitch McGeechan.
Nathan Storrier received the player’s player award
League Tag
The She Devils took on the Bungendore Tigerettes on the weekend in a game that was keenly contested.
Unlike their previous encounter two weeks prior, it was the home side that got first points, and it came within the first two minutes when the Devils captain Kayla Gann put her centre 3/4 April Flannery through a gap 10 meters out to score after some good ball work and running from the back line.
The try was converted by their goal kicker Tatum Lenane .
For the next quarter of the game both teams defended strongly and attacking plays were plenty.
A strong kicking game from Crookwell hooker Bec Hewitt and half back Danica Lenane. Great defence by Monique Naughton, Maddie Cummins and the backs kept Bungendore in there half.
A run of penalties against Crookwell with five minutes until half time saw Bungendore in good field position and it didn't take them long to capitalise, going over to score, taking it to 6 all.
But the half wasn't finished there.
From a great kick off by Heidi Chudleigh and chase by her team, Bungendore made a mistake and Crookwell received a penalty with one minute to go.
They took the chance for points and converted a penalty goal, going to the break ahead 8/6.
The second half wasn't a fortunate one for Crookwell, with their centre in Emma Romer dislocating her knee and Bec Hewitt collecting a set of knees in her back also having to leave the field.
The girls dug deep but with their bench depleted and penalties against them Bungendore ran in two tries over the next 15min.
With five minutes to go the Devils made one last push for points and their efforts payed off with their co-captain Heidi Chudleigh racing away from 50 out to score a great converted try. The full time score going the way of the visitors 18/14.
Coach Paddy Lenane was very impressed with his team’s performance despite the loss saying, "I just wanted the girls to improve on the previous game against Bungendore, in our defence around the ruck and varying our attack, and I think they did a great job today. “They stuck together when they lost a couple of players, so I was really happy.”
Best and fairest points went to; Heidi Chudleigh 3, Kayla Gann 2, Monique Naughton 1.
Players player was Kayla Gann.
