Athletics Carnival
Our school joined with other small schools in our area for a fantastic athletics carnival. Students from kindergarten to year 6 participated in running races, sack races and field events. The day started with 200m and 50m races for younger students. Then running skills were tested with 100m sprints and the long distance 800m races.

In the afternoon all students competed in high jump, long jump, discus and shot put. Infants students also got to play some fun games. It was wonderful to see so many students have a go at these events and we wish those going on to the district carnival good luck!
Pink Stumps Day
Laggan participated in the annual fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation for the fourth year in a row. Students, staff and parents dressed in pink, participated in sports games and a fun game of cricket in the afternoon. In total we raised $73 for breast care nurses. Great work!
Convict Sleepover
As part of our unit of work on first contact and the first fleet students from years 2-6 travelled to Sydney to be convicts for a night. Before that we visited the Royal Botanic Gardens to learn about life before European settlement and looked at the first farm. Then we trekked to The Rocks to join in a hands on tour of the area to learn about how tough was like for early settlers. We looked at how cramped living quarters were and how fast diseases could spread.
That night we became convicts at Hyde Park Barracks. Students dressed as convicts, learnt about their journey to Australia and life once they arrived. Then came convict rations, stories and games and sleeping in hammocks! The hammocks were not the most comfortable place to sleep but we learnt how tough life used to be.
In the morning in was roll call, breakfast and then we received our ticket of leave and headed to Manly on the ferry to see what the First Fleet would’ve seen on entry to the harbour. We survived the rain and enjoyed fish and chips before heading home tired but happy to be living in modern times.
Easter Hat Parade
On Thursday we all brought our Easter hats and got ready for our end of term assembly. We were told the story of Easter first and we all got to join in acting out the story. After that we received our awards we sang Don’t Call me a Koala Bear and We Will Sing Rubber Ducky (a song we wrote ourselves). Then came our spectacular Easter Hat parade and egg hunt.
Parents then came and saw our research tasks we had prepared on Prezi and PowerPoint and shared our Easter cooking treats. It was a great day.
150th Celebration coming up!
2018 will see the celebration of 150 years of public education at Laggan Public School. We will be holding a range of events in 2018 and are looking for people who would be keen to be involved in helping out as well as anyone who has photos, stories or artefacts from their time at Laggan Public School. We will be holding a meeting on Thursday 4th May at 2pm in the school library. Anyone is welcome to come along and join in.
