The ram came out of the under one year class, born April/May 2016, and was bred by father and son duo, Brett and Cameron Picker of Rocdell White Suffolks, Bigga.
Judge McRae thought the young ram lacked the finish of the grand champion bred by the Kinellar stud, Canowindra, by Victoria Patterson and her family, but said he was still an exemplary breed type.
When judging the objective measurement class, Mr McRae noted he did not look at the measurements before assessing the sheep. He awarded the first place to a ram bred by the Rocdell White Suffolk stud.
“It was good to see rams coming through the visual classes doing well when objectively measured,” Mr McRae said.
The Patterson family’s Kinellar stud, exhibited the second and third place rams in the objective measurement class.
The pair of rams, showing milk teeth only was won by the Patterson family, Kinellar White Suffolks, Canowindra, ahead of the pair bred by Bruce Standford, Merton White Suffolks, Budgee Budgee, with the pair bred by Mick and Ruth Wall, Borrehma White Suffolks, Braidwood, in third.
Mr McRae thought the winners a “massively powerful pair of rams with beautiful loin muscle that handles well”.
Honours in the female classes were also evenly spread, with Borrehma stud taking the grand with a ewe which had been placed first in the under one year and born after August 1, 2016 class. The sires progeny group was won by Kinellar, ahead of Borrehma, with Rocdell third.
