They arrived in Melbourne Victoria on board the ship “Great Victoria” on September 5, 1863.
The family sailed for Sydney on the ship “Wonga Wonga” on February 29, 1864.
Joseph held most respectable and onerous situations during his short time in the colony.
He was manager of the Fitzroy Iron Works at Nattai and was the first man here to manufacture cold and hot blast iron; he was also Superintendent of the iron railway bridges etc. and held other government appointments.
He also held two patents obtained in England, one for the patent safety cage, and the other for washing and delivering coal.
At the time of his death, he was the Engineer at the “Washington Mine”, Junction Point, Mr Washington Brown having hired him.
Joseph Kaye Hampshire died at Junction Point on November 19, 1870.
He had gone to the creek to wash out a prospect pan and he seemed to have been gone a long time when his wife went to check on him she found him dead, lying full length in the bed of the creek.
An inquest was held into his death and it was found that death was caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the brain.
He was buried at Junction Point cemetery.
