The Southwells have lived in Crookwell for more than 30 years and contributed to the community in many ways. Don spent two terms as a councillor and one year as deputy mayor for the Crookwell Council.

The couple has long been involved with Rotary: Don has been a member for more than 50 years.

The pair lived in Campbelltown before moving to Crookwell, where Beryl had a family day care program at home with before- and after-school activities. She looked after four children. 

Beryl also ran the canteen at the Grafton School when they lived for 11 years.

Don’s hobby of flying and racing model planes has seen them tour and compete all over Australia. It has been two years since he last competed, but they are now spending time visiting friends they have made through his hobby.

Cricket, golf and bowls have also kept them busy as have four children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Their children gave them solar panels for their wedding anniversary.

Don said some of his best years were when he was an actor and singer for the CADS stage productions.

He started his acting career playing the part of a bishop. “That wasn’t so bad,” he said, “but I finished off as the town drunk, in Min Min Lights!”

He chuckled and said he had loved every miute of his acting career.

Don’s passion is now with the Men’s Shed, and as an advocate for men’s health. He has a mild health condition but with medication he manages it.

“It won’t stop me from running the Shed and still being involved with the community,” he said.

Don gave Beryl a diamond necklace to mark their milestone, and the couple said the secret to their happy and long marriage was “caring and sharing”.
