Initiative links students to community

Fourteen year 8 students will be cooking up a storm at the Crookwell Senior Citizen centre from 10.30am this Thursday as part of Links to Learning. 

Food will range from spinach and cheese scones to Mars Bar slices and bacon and tomato quiches, all for the Biggest Morning Tea.  

Singing a different tune, the year 9 group are focusing on recycling and have contacted local businesses in the Shire with an aim to turn unused waste into something of value.

Links to Learning program facilitator Tory Simmons, who has been with the Year 8 class for four months, said the weekly classes gives individual students the opportunity to shine.

“They do school a little bit differently for the day,” Ms Simmons said.

“The local community find support and it gives the students ideas, fosters better communication and employment.” 

Among the year 8 class, she said she has proudly noticed a surge in friendship.

“The program gives everyone a chance to shine in a different way,” she said in reference to the line dancing and singing which will be performed on the day.

“Some students are great in other classes and get a chance to shine, some students haven’t had that chance yet. This gives them a chance to do something they haven’t done before.

“It’s a team and each person has a chance to play a different role in the team.” 

The morning tea will is open to the public and will run 10.30am-1.30pm.
