The van helps support early detection for the one in eight women in NSW affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. SNSWLHD spokeswoman Julie Mooney calls it “a vital piece of health infrastructure, bringing potentially lifesaving cancer screening to women without the need to travel long distances to larger towns”.
The Cancer Institute NSW manages the state-wide breast screening program, says its screening and prevention director, Sarah McGill.
“These mammograms can detect cancers before they can be seen or felt,” Ms McGill said, emphasising the need for early detection.
“If detected early, survival from breast cancer can be as high as 97 per cent.
“It is vital for all women aged between 50 and 74 to have a mammogram every two years at BreastScreen NSW.
“It is a free service that could save your life.”
