The Crookwell District Junior Cricket Association (CDJCA) has been proudly represented by local St Mary’s student Jake Cosgrove, who has just returned from representative honours by playing in the three-day Kookaburra Cup conducted in the ACT last week.

This particular cup attracted many players who performed at incredible levels under the watchful eyes of Cricket Australia talent identification selectors.
“It was an awesome experience for me to play against some of the best batsman and bowlers that I have ever come across,” Jake said of his opposition.
Jake originally trialed in August and gained selection in the Under 12’s Southern Tablelands Cricket squad that covers the Crookwell, Goulburn, and Yass regions.
“He went really well,” Jake’s father and CDJCA committee member Allan Cosgrove said.
“There were some quality players there. They’re coming from Sydney and Canberra and the south coast, so you’re playing some really quality players.”
The team trained for several weeks leading up to the competition, and played in one trial game against Bowral.
Following the three intensive days of competition, with six matches played overall, the Southern Tablelands side won half of their games and finished fifth out of the ten teams competing.
“I think compared to last year, it was an extremely good result,” Cosgrove said.
“They’re quite a young side too, the Goulburn side, so I think it was an excellent result considering their age and size.
“They never won a game last year.”
When asked what the difference was between last year’s competition and this year’s, Cosgrove said that it was a matter of team cohesiveness.
“I think they banded together as a team,” he said. “The friendship that they created, that’s what I think got them across the line a lot. They just played as a team, [with] plenty of talk and encouragement to each other.”
After the Kookaburra Cup, the team will enter a competition which concludes in late November against teams from the Southern Highlands, ACT, far south coast, and the Monaro area.
“This is the Under 12’s inter association competition, the ACT Southern Districts,” Cosgrove said. “It’s a six game format and then they’ll enter into finals.”
The competition will run from Sunday October 28 to December 9.
Two other local boys in Oliver Corbally-Stoutan and Sam McGregor will join the Under 12’s Southern Highlands team. Their inclusion will further strengthen the team for a successful campaign over the coming weeks.
The CDJCA wishes the best of luck to the three boys who now have extremely busy commitments of mid-week training and Sunday games, especially with the local junior cricket competition kicking off this Saturday.
