Crookwell Services Club (which has amalgamated with the Bowling Club) manager April Flannery said that the latter event was a great success and was enjoyed by all the bowlers who were involved.
“I think they all really enjoyed it, from the feedback that I’ve got,” Flannery said.
“Our bowlers formed a bit of a relationship with the Tomakin Sports Club down the coast.
“They’ve worked out this social bowls weekend where every second year, we host.”
This year was Crookwell’s turn to host, and Flannery said that there was an emphatic turnout from both clubs who took part.
“It’s not a competition thing or anything, it’s just about getting Tomakin bowlers to visit Crookwell and vice versa,” she said.
“We had about 65 bowlers all up for the weekend. It’s just about bringing people to Crookwell, [and] bringing people to the club.”
Although the weekend was marred by severe thunderstorms, Flannery said that it didn’t ruin the good spirits of those who took part.
“It was good, except for the fact that we had a massive storm and blacked out,” she said.
“But anyways, it was still a good weekend.”
The social weekend was preceded by a charity event, the purpose of which was to raise money for the local healthcare centre.
“Our women have just done a charity day,” Flannery said.
“They donated money to the healthcare centre here in Crookwell. We waived the green fees, and bowlers came from Bowral, we had a couple of teams come from Canberra, Goulburn, maybe a couple from Yass.
“They did raffles and the proceeds of the whole day went to the healthcare centre.”
Flannery is still awaiting confirmation of the exact amount raised by the day, but she said that it was estimated to have been just under $1,000.
These two events heralded the beginning of a hectic period for the Crookwell Bowls Club, as they are preparing to begin a Barefoot Bowls tournament which will run throughout the summer.
“That’s gonna be every Thursday through summer,” Flannery said.
“It’s just a gold coin donation, we’re just trying to get more people involved and get people out in summertime.”
It will be followed by a special event on Australia Day, which Flannery is currently planning. However, she has not yet confirmed the details of the event.
