“Everywhere I go I get fed cake,” says Clare McCabe. It’s not the first thing our local news journo said for this interview, but it’s the one that stood out.
Since moving here to be the Crookwell Gazette’s reporter Clare has discovered “A really homely community”.
It can be daunting moving into a new area and building people’s trust to write the news, but “Everyone has been really welcoming and friendly, and the community here looks after each other and watches each other’s back, and I’ve been lucky to have been invited into that over the last couple of months,” Clare says appreciatively.
As for what it’s been like working here, “There’s never a dull moment or slow day and the town keeps me busy with news and events. Everyone has a story to tell, even if they don’t realise it, and the more I get to know people in the community the more I find out about the lives they lead,” Clare said.
“There’s big stories too, such as the raising of Wyangala Dam and how this will affect Grabine Road.”
Clare also wants to give a “Special shout out to all my little birdies in town who tip me off with the hot news. Being a solo journalist in town has its busy moments and I try to get around to work with everyone.”
In terms of highlights “One standout was the interview with the Wheeo Red Cross Branch that closed and they told me all about the old parties in the big estates.”
Another observation Clare made was “The community has some really bright and innovative people contributing good things to the area. It’s really positive for a community to have people like that around.”
Clare’s final message is “The newspaper is here to reach the heart of the community, and to promote enterprise and advocate for those whose voices aren’t often the loudest.”
Donna Winterbottom meanwhile was born in Crookwell, raised on a farm in nearby Bevandale, and moved into town as an adult.
Donna has been the local sales rep for the Crookwell Gazette since January 2018, although many of you knew her before that for the pet services she used to provide as a self-employed local.
When asked to describe Crookwell, Donna said “It’s a small area, but it’s still busy”.
Over the years Donna has also witnessed the same changes to this location as you. “The pool repainting has brightened up the town, the parks are looking great, and it’s an appealing main street”.
Donna also noted the many great local events that are attracting visitors.
Finally, Donna says “Thanks to those who are supporting the paper. We’re supporting you, but we also rely on your support.”
