While police and government may enjoy early closure and lock-out laws, the systematic governance by the authorities could pay a heavy toll on the community.
In a recent article in the Gazette, intern Xanthe Gregory interviewed long-time publican Denise Perry of Bigga Pub.
“It keeps the community together,” Ms Perry said.
“People come here and get to meet new faces.”
It has long been a meeting place and social hub for residents and farmers alike.
Studies suggest that because of the geography of country areas, where there is a lack of recreational activities, the country pub gives youth a place to connect with each other.
Further, the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health website states that connection with others is important for health and survival.
Their research shows that feeling connected, valued and loved by others gives us a sense of security, support, purpose and happiness.
Not just that, it also promotes our region’s wares, as many venues choose to support our producers.
Annual festivals draw in swathes of tourists to the area throughout the year, such as the Irish Festival, the Garden Festival and the Crookwell Show.
The country pub is a key attraction for these visitors and, being so close to metro centres, the area also attracts any number of weekend visitors.
According to the Australian Hotels Association, hotels and pubs also provide unique opportunities for the development of local music talent, and foster sporting and community groups.
There are problems that can be encountered, such as infrastructure, or a lack of public transport or taxis, which can impact on both the police and safety at large of the community.
There are strict licensing regulations that have to be adhered to by publicans; however, residents must also play their part as individuals. Because if last drinks are called, it may well be forever.
