In 2020, the zone 3 Land Sydney Royal Showgirl Competition will be held in Crookwell. The last time the Crookwell Show Society hosted the zone finals was in 2014 and, before that, 2004.
The winner of the zone competition will go on to vie for the title of Sydney Royal Showgirl. At both previous finals, the zone champion went on to be crowned the overall winner.
Crookwell Show Society's Showgirl coordinator Katrina Nixon is hoping a home final will attract more local participants. "If you think you've got the calibre: it's for girls with a rural background and a career in agribusiness," Mrs Nixon said.
Many Showgirls have represented Crookwell at both the zone competition and at Sydney: last year, Crookwell's Lauren Selmes was judged as the zone winner, and; in 2012, Jasmine Green was declared as the Land Sydney Royal Showgirl.
The Showgirl competition is for women aged 18 to 25-years and can propel a career in agriculture. Crookwell is a part of zone 3, which extends as far south as Adelong and Bombala, west to Yass and on the coast to Cobargo and Bega.
In previous years, the zone has only sent one lady to compete at Sydney Royal, but more than two can attend if the zone finals have more than ten contestants.
Mrs Nixon is hoping that Crookwell, Gunning and Taralga will have an entrant. "It's important to have a presence," she said. "It promotes the area and region and young women in agriculture and agribusiness."
Mrs Nixon said the judges will be looking for someone who is worldly with an interest in agribusiness.
"Most girls have knowledge of current affairs in rural NSW," she added.
To participate as Crookwell Showgirl ladies must nominate by October.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Crookwell AP&H Society's website (crookwellshow.com.au).
There will be a two-day workshop held at Dubbo which teaches women about speech, the interview process, etiquette and deportment, and is a chance to make new connections. The development weekend is co-ordinated by Dubbo Show secretary Sue Hood.
The Crookwell Showgirl will attend the personal development training on either November 23 and 24 or January 11 and 12.
The presentation of the zone 3 Showgirl will be held in the evening on February 29, 2020, interviews will be held during the day.
"Judges are organised by the Agricultural Societies Council of NSW, usually a representative from the ASC, Rural Press and a previous Rural Achiever or Showgirl."
The guest speaker will be Airlie Landale, founder of the Farm Table and 2015 Rural Achiever.
