Over 2 million reasons to celebrate our carers

October 13-19 is National Carers Week.

This week is an opportunity to educate and raise awareness about the diversity of carers and their roles.

Each week, carers provide 36 million hours of care and support according to Carers NSW. It would cost our economy over $60.5 billion each year in replacement value.

However, the role of a carer is challenging socially, emotionally and physically. And carers are increasingly reporting high levels of psychological distress.

"The demands of a caring role often mean that carers aren't as free to participate in society as their peers who do not have caring responsibilities," said Carers NSW chief executive, Elena Katrakis,

"This can lead to loneliness and a sense of isolation."

A survey of more than 2000 carers in NSW shows that more than 50 per cent provided over 60 hours of care each week. It also showed that there is a high demand for support services.

Almost 12 months ago, the Crookwell Carer Support Group with the assistance of Carers ACT was established. The support and networking group provides a pathway to crucial services as well as a place to de-stress and relax.

"There are 23 members in the group," organiser Sharon Thearle said. "There are new members from Goulburn and Braidwood.

"People can contribute or just sit and listen, or the group can offer pathways and referrals," Ms Thearle said.

Anyone, at any time, can become a carer.

"Its about camaraderie."

The Carer Support Group meets at the Crookwell Services Club on the second Wednesday of each month from 11am-1pm.

From July this year, the Australian Government began rolling out new early-intervention services and support for carers. Providing access to peer support, self-guided coaching, phone-based counselling services, and practical skills courses.

Further services began in September.
