Having taken place from Friday, October 8 until Sunday, October 10, the Country Championships saw four teams from Southern NSW converge on Goulburn.
Sides from ACT Southern Districts, Riverina, Western, and Greater Illawarra, battled throughout the three days and put on impressive displays of cricket.
Each team played one match per day, and the ACT Southern Districts side, which featured four Goulburn players, lost to Riverina and Greater Illawarra, and scored an impressive win over Western.
"There was a lot of younger guys in there and it was really good experience for them," Watling said.
"I think all the boys will learn, you probably learn more from losing than winning. It's not always fun, but it's good to learn."
Throughout the weekend, ACT Southern Districts struggled with injuries to key players. Watling himself suffered from a back injury, which forced him to miss the first match, while opening bowler Jak Willcox was sidelined with a side strain prior to the championships.
Subsequently, the team struggled to put its best efforts on display, Watling said.
"A couple of boys missed out on the weekend which was unfortunate," he said.
"It's just a matter of executing on the field ... I don't think we lacked ability, we just missed out."
Though it was the Greater Illawarra team who progressed to next weekend's grand final, Watling identified the four players who he thought stood out for ACT Southern Districts.
"Robbie Trickett, he scored the hundred on Saturday and backed it up with 40-odd on Sunday, he was one of the standouts," Watling said.
"Dylan Faram also scored a 50 and a 30-odd on the weekend.
"On the bowling, [Tivey] led the wickets with five or six and our offspinner Fin McGurk picked up a few wickets as well. Everyone chipped in, but those guys were our main performers."
Watling thanked the GDCA, Cricket NSW, and all independent volunteers who helped prepare Seiffert Oval and Prell Oval for the championships, and who ensured the event ran smoothly.
