Already on Monday, a player had tested positive in a routine quick test before training.

According to the relegated club, the player was immediately isolated and the team training was cancelled. Both players who had contracted the virus had not been named.

In addition, the entire squad subsequently took polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, which are more accurate and confirmed the positive result of Monday's quick test and identified a second one.

"Both players are currently self-isolating at home and are asymptomatic, while another affected person has had no contact with first team members since last Friday," a statement said.

Schalke said since all other test results returned negative, the team travelled as planned to a compulsory quarantine training camp later on Tuesday.

The club also clarified "as things stand", Wednesday's Bundesliga home match against Hertha Berlin will take place as planned.

The game against Hertha had been postponed to Wednesday after a coronavirus outbreak among the capital side ranks.

While Schalke have long had their relegation confirmed, the rearranged midweek fixture at Veltins Arena is crucial for Hertha, who are yet to secure their top-flight status.
