Royal Life Saving is reminding people to be water safe and swim ready.
"More and more Australians are enjoying the health benefits of swimming," Michael Illinsky, chief executive officer of Royal Life Saving NSW said.
The peak body for water safety is urging those aged 45-years and older to consult their doctor before swimming to prevent drowning deaths involving people with pre-existing conditions.
Their latest research shows there is a link between the use of medication and an increased risk of drowning.
In the last 17 years, 55 per cent of drowning deaths in NSW of people aged over 45-years was those with a pre-existing condition such as heart disease, diabetes, mental health, and dementia.
Medication has side effects that can impact exercise putting people at a higher risk of drowning during aquatic activities.
Royal Life Saving has these tips for ageing Australians taking a trip to the pool:
- Consult your doctor about your health;
- Consider the effects of any medication you are taking, and;
- Swim in supervised areas, such as local aquatic centres.
Crookwell and Gunning Pools will be open daily.
